How to check an IMEI before an install

Make sure a cellular module can be activated, and check coverage at the address.

Who can do this: Owners, managers and techs (Alarm.com dealers)Updated Oct 25, 2026
  1. Open Check IMEI from the menu. It shows once Alarm.com is connected.
  2. Enter the 15-digit IMEI or the modem serial number. It's printed on the cellular module or panel label, usually under a barcode. On a phone, press Scan barcode with camera.
  3. Add the ZIP code to also check cellular coverage.
  4. Press check.

You'll see one of these:

  • Available to activate: the modem can be used for a new account.
  • Cannot be activated: for example, it's already assigned to another account.
  • Coverage: Full coverage, Mostly covered, Partial coverage or No cellular coverage at that ZIP.
Tip: If Alarm.com says it has no modem with that number, check the digits and try again.
